El Raval, Barcelona: Location and surroundings of this property
The old town (Ciudad Vieja) consists of four main districts: the Gothic Neighbourhood , Barceloneta, Born and Raval.
The Gothic neighbourhood , which includes the Rambla and Via Laietana, is the most touristy area of Barcelona. When l'Eixample was built in the 1900s, many residents moved out of the Gothic neighbourhood to enjoy a better quality of life, so the area fell into neglect. However, over the last few decades, this neighbourhood has undergone a spectacular regeneration that has seen tourists flood it, the crime rate drop and property values increase.
The area also has some of the best music venues in Europe, such as the Gran Teatro del Liceo (the opera house) and the Palau de la Música Catalana, which is housed in a magnificent building. Likewise, here we also find the Picasso museum and the city cathedral.
Las Ramblas border the Raval, which is currently in the process of regeneration. Thanks to its atmosphere that is more intense and bohemian than that of other neighborhoods in the Old City, El Raval is home to fantastic bars, the MACBA (Museum of Contemporary Art), a new university campus and many more places of interest.
In the lower area of the Gothic neighbourhood we have El Born, the most fashionable neighbourhood in Barcelona.
